COTABATO CITY (SDN) — What students, workers, and the people in general have been waiting for.
The Bangsamoro Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) under the leadership of Chief Minister Ahod Balawag “Al-Haj Murad” Ebrahim has declared the regular holidays and working and non-working holidays in the region.
Established in 2018 by the Bangsamoro Organic Law (BOL) to implement the 2014 Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro (CAB), the Bangsamoro region is made up of the provinces of Basilan, Lanao del Sur, Maguindanao del Sur, Maguindanao del Norte, Sulu, and Tawi-Tawi, the cities of Cotabato, Lamitan, and Marawi, as well as the Special Geographic Area’s (SGA) 63 barangays or villages that voted “Yes” in a plebiscite in February 2019 to be under the BARMM jurisdiction.
According to the Philippine Atlas BARMM has 4,404,288 people. It has 116 municipalities: Basilan, 11 municipalities; Lanao del Sur, 39; undivided Maguindanao, 36; Sulu, 19; and Tawi-Tawi, 11. Its component cities are Cotabato (the regional center and capital) in Maguindanao; Lamitan in Basilan; and Marawi in Lanao del Sur.
On the authority of Ebrahim, chairman of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) running the Bangsamoro Transition Authority (BTA), BARMM Assistant Senior Minister Abdullah “Dong” M. Cusain declared through Proclamation No. 005, Series of 2023, the following regular holidays and working/non-working days the entire autonomous region will enjoy in the year of the Wood Dragon, 2024.

Proclamation No. 005, Series of 2023, mentioned Republic Act (RA) No. 9492, RA No. 9177, and RA No. 9849 to explain the Bangsamoro government’s regional declaration.
It also cited Bangsamoro Autonomy Act No. 39, which “An Act Governing Observance of Regular and Special Holidays in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), Repealing for the Purpose Muslim Mindanao Autonomy Act No. 17, Otherwise Known as An Act Recognizing Muslim Historical and Religious Events and Holidays in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) for Other Purposes”.
Meanwhile, the Chief Minister of the BARMM draws his power in declaring holidays and special days from RA No. 11054, to “issue executive orders and other policies of the Bangsamoro Government” as well as to “exercise such other powers and functions inherent to the office.” (✓)
