COTABATO CITY (SDN) — From the looks of it, the leadership of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) is highly anticipatory of the May 2025 first parliamentary political exercise.
That’s especially considering that BARMM Chief Minister Ahod B. “Al-Haj Murad” Ebrahim is president of the United Bangsamoro Justice Party (UBJP), the political platform of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) formed in 2013.
The UBJP had a show of force during the party’s 1st Regional General Assembly with registered participants reaching 28,000 warm bodies, according to its Secretariat.
Remember that President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr. had already made it known that he wants the regional parliamentary election to push through.
Originally, the first parliamentary polls would have been part of the national and local elections on May 9, 2022. Congress, however, agreed to re-set it to May 2025, due mainly to the coronavirus pandemic that slashed through the entire world. Millions were killed across the world. Governments imposed months of lockdown, preventing, even stopping, a wide range of in-person public and private activities. Not to mention scuttled routine everyday tasks.
On Saturday, 17th February, the UBJP led by Ebrahim conducted what turned out to be a highly successful 1st Regional General Assembly. It was held at the Cotabato State University (CSU) Oval, along the city’s busy artery, Sinsuat Avenue.
The last count by the UBJP General Assembly Secretariat placed the number of the registered participants at 28,000 warm bodies. Nothing to sneeze at, considering that organizers’ projection was only 10,000.
Ebrahim, UBJP Executive Vice President Mohagher M. Iqbal, the vice president for Central Mindanao, and other party officers sounded upbeat during the assembly on the holding of the parliamentary election.
“Hinihimok ko kayong lahat, lalo na ang mga kabataan na makibahagi sa gaganaping 2025 parliamentary elections. Let this be your battle now. Hindi na ito para sa amin, ito ay para sa inyong kinabukasan, sa inyong mga anak sa susunod na mga henerasyon,” the UBJP president said as he exhorted the youth.
(Translation: I am calling on all of you, especially the youth, to participate in the forthcoming 2025 parliamentary elections. Let this be your battle now. This is no longer for us, this is for your future, for your children and the next generations.)
Iqbal shared the UBJP president’s call on the Bangsamoro youths, as well as to every member of the party.
“We are brothers in faith, in humanity,” he stressed as he encouraged the members to collectively reap the dividends of peace of the Bangsamoro struggle for self-determination, economic uplift, and freedom to live peacefully and with stability. Iqbal cited the significance of the parliamentary election in 2025. “Share your efforts for a credible, honest, and orderly (political exercise).”

According to the Philippine Atlas BARMM has 4,404,288 people. It has 116 municipalities: Basilan, 11 municipalities; Lanao del Sur, 39; undivided Maguindanao, 36; Sulu, 19; and Tawi-Tawi, 11.
