COTABATO CITY (SDN) — More than two months in the making, the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) finally conducted its 2nd BARMM Education Summit on November 28-29, 2024, in Davao City.

The two-event revolved around the theme, One MBHTE: Advancing Access, Equity and Excellence in All Bangsamoro Modalities even as it also emphasized the BARMM mantra that “No Bangsamoro learner shall be left behind”.

Of course, “MBHTE” is the Ministry of Basic, Higher and Technical Education (MBHTE), one of the 15 primary ministries of the Bangsamoro Government.

Here’s some of the inspiring messages of key participants in the summit:

BARMM Chief Minister Ahod Balawag “Al-Haj Murad” Ebrahim —

“We must always innovate in areas of curriculum development, teacher training, and empowerment, and assessment systems must reflect the unique needs and aspirations of the Bangsamoro. Our educators are the pillars of our educational system, and it is incumbent that we invest in their professional development.
We cannot empower our children without first empowering their second parents.”

BARMM Education Minister and head of MBHTE Mohagher M. Iqbal —

“I stand before you today at the 2nd Bangsamoro Education Summit with profound humility and immense gratitude. This gathering is more than a convergence of minds; it is a testament to our collective vision of transforming education in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) into an example of hope, progress, justice, and unity. “

More of Iqbal’s Inspiration Message —

“I stand before you with a heart full of hope and determination. Today, we have reflected on our shared journey in education — our achievements, our challenges, and our dreams for a better tomorrow. Education has always been a significant pillar in every thriving society.

“In the Bangsamoro, it is not just a path to knowledge but a bridge to peace, progress, and self-determination.
To reiterate, our pursuit of education reflects our autonomy. It is a tangible testament to our capacity to shape the future of our people based on our unique context, values, practices, and aspirations. Through our contextualized education system, we are reclaiming our narratives, celebrating our identity, and ensuring that our children learn in an environment that resonates with their heritage while preparing them to succeed in a global society.”

Sen. Sherwin T. Gatchalian, chair of the Senate Committee on Basic Education and Ways and Means —

“Ang pangako naman namin sa Senado at sa Education Commission na kung saan isa ako sa mga co-chairpersons ay hindi namin pababayaaan ang BARMM. Lagi po kaming tututok sa mga pangangailangan ninyo.” (Translation: Our promise from and the Senate and the Education Commission, where I am one of the co-chairpersons is we will not neglect the BARMM. We will always be focused on your needs.)

Message of Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Juan Edgardo “Sonny” Angara, represented by Assistant Secretary Roger Masapol at the 2nd BARMM Education Summit —

“Education in BARMM must not only catch up; it must flourish and celebrate its people’s heritage. Our mission is clear, an education that is accessible, forward thinking, and rooted in the Filipino values that must be shared in the heart or in the beliefs of BARMM.

Every learner has the right and opportunity that will allow them to thrive.”
