SHANGRI-LA AT THE FORT, Bonifacio Global City, Taguig City (SDN) — On the 22nd of February 2024, the Arab State of Kuwait celebrated in the Philippines its 63rd National Day and 33rd Liberation Day.
The Embassy of Kuwait in the Philippines headed by His Excellency Ambassador Musaed Saleh Al-Thwaikh led the successful event as he welcomed foreign and Filipino diplomats and others in the diplomatic community, Philippine government officials, women leaders, professionals, business personalities, members of the media, and friends of the Embassy.
Attendees from the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) were led by Undersecretary for Migrant Workers Affairs Eduardo Jose A. De Vega and Assistant Secretary for Middle East and African Affairs Mardomel Celo Melicor.
Regular diplomatic affairs attendee Sen. Robinhood “Abdul Aziz” Padilla and Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA) Chairman Delfin N. Lorenzana came in to share in the affair held in this five-star hotel.
From the foreign diplomatic community, the diplomats included Archbishop Charles J. Brown, Apostolic Nuncio and the Dean of the Diplomatic Corps of the Philippines, Saudi Arabia Ambassador Hisham bin Sultan Al-Qahtani, United Arab Emirates Ambassador Obaid Al-Qattam Al-Zaabi, Qatar Ambassador Ahmed Saad N.A. Al-Homidi, Palestine Ambassador Saleh A.F. Mohammad, Syria’s Honorary Consul to the Philippines Issam El-Debs, Embassy of Nigeria Counsellors Ms. Charity Ekeada-Davidson and Leonard Ekhasomhi Asekhame, and others.
Government agencies such as the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF) and the Cooperative Development Agency (CDA) also were represented, such as NCMF Officer-in-Charge (OIC) Commissioner Yusoph J. Mando, NCMF Deputy Executive Director Atty. Jehan-Jehan Lepail, Assistant Secretary for Cooperative Development Datu Pendatun “Penny” B. Disimban, Ph.D., among other government officials.
As is tradition, media organizations also were invited to the event, such as Manila Bulletin‘s Barbie Atienza and Bernadette Cunanan, Business Mirror Sections Editor Lyn B. Resurreccion, Phil-IT.org tech reporter and developer Michael Lance Domagas, this SDN journalist, etc.

It can be recalled the Philippines recognized Kuwait as an independent country in September 1961. That was three months after the Arab country gained independence, hence the celebration of its 63rd National Day.
Kuwait’s 33rd Liberation Day refers to its liberation from the grip of Iraq, which invaded the former in 1991. The Philippines was part of the United States alliance that liberated Kuwait.
It was in January 1979 when the Philippines and Kuwait established formal diplomatic relations, the same year the latter opened its embassy in the former. Kuwait opened its embassy in the Philippines in 1966. (Source: Wikipedia)
