(SDN) — FEATI University welcomed on Monday, March 9, 2022, a delegation from Japan’s Tokyo Metro Co. Ltd., which operates a subway train system in Tokyo, the Japanese capital.

Tokyo Metro Manager for International Relations Masayoshi Nakajima headed the delegation from the Land of the Rising Sun and welcomed by FEATI officials led by CEO Francisco Segovia, President Adolfo Jesus R. Gopez, along with the university community.

Segovia and company also welcomed a delegation from the Philippine Railways Institute of the Department of Transportation (DoTr-PRI) led by PRI Training Chief Israel Radiaganding.

It can be noted that Tokyo Metro (東京メトロ, Tōkyō Metoro), one of the rapid transit systems in Japan, donated two couches of its Marunouchi Series 2 trains to FEATI University. “Marunouchi” is named after Tokyo’s bustling Marunouchi Business District where Tokyo Metro has railway lines crisscrossing Greater Tokyo along with other rapid transit systems.

FEATI already built a railway track for its Marunouchi Series 2 trains, a tool for students taking up its Railway Programs, an initiative of CEO Segovia. It serves as a real-life industry immersion for students in the FEATI Railways Programs.

It’s expected that the FEATI community gains a lot from its industry partners like Tokyo Metro and PRI to prepare students to become work-ready with specialist knowledge and practical training, a catalyst to innovation and growth.

In his visit to the university along the historic Pasig River in ever-busy Sta. Cruz, Manila (a stone’s throw away from Manila Chinatown), Tokyo Metro’s Nakajima gave a lecture on the Marunouchi trains they donated.

In his presentation the Japanese visitor provided an overview on the actual railway engineering equipment and structures, including operation, maintenance and safety of railway track, rolling stock, signalling, monitoring, controls and safety.

On the other hand, DoTr’s PRI is “a rail transportation research and training center in the Philippines” dealing with research and development (R&D) focusing on the “management, operation, and maintenance of railways, and training of personnel in the rail transportation industry”.

Present during the visit were, from FEATI University, CEO Segovia, who is also Vice Chairman of the Board, and the major force/prime mover of the FEATI Railway Programs, as well as all other university initiatives; Gopez; Chairman of the Board and Executive Vice President Dr. Gloria M. Alberto; the Dean, Department Chairpersons and faculty members of the College of Engineering, and other administrators.

University President Dr. Adolfo Jesus R. Gopez welcomes the visitors from Tokyo Metro and DoTr-PRI, as well as other guests.

From the DoTr-PRI, Training Division Chief Radiagading, Research & Development Division Officer-in-Charge Kimjay Lamar, and some instructors. PRI is on academe partnership with FEATI University.

The Philippine Railways Institute (PRI) is a research and training center under the administrative supervision of the Department of Transportation (DoTr). Established by virtue of Executive Order No. 96, s. 2019, the PRI shall serve as the planning, implementing, regulating, and administrative entity for the development of human resources in the
railway sector to ensure efficient, reliable, and safe railway transportation services.

To ensure the success of its operation and provide for a better future for the rail sector, partnership with the academe is a must, the PRI said.

In the case of FEATI University several of its engineering students have already attended PRI training.

“At present, the PRI is creating a database of railway-related engineering or management courses, electives, or tracks. We intend to include this in our planned regular conduct of CareeRiles webinars for senior high school students, or college students who wish to join the rail sector,” the institute emphasized.

In 2021, FEATI University celebrated its 75th anniversary. In addition to its original mandate in science and engineering, the university now also offers degrees in visual arts, railway, communication arts, maritime education, information technology, business administration and architecture.

Through the legacy of its founders and the foresight of its current Chief Executive Officer, Francisco “Fritz” A. Segovia, FEATI University unceasingly fosters its long and rich tradition of academic excellence powered by cutting-edge 21st century innovations for teaching and learning. It also embarked on a massive revitalization and remodeling of the campus facilities and workshop areas to align itself with the demands of modernization. The University prides itself with the impact of this urban landscape development bringing FEATI to a whole new level in the skyline the City of Manila.
