TAGUIG CITY (SDN) — The local government of Taguig City lost no time in responding to the needs of its constituents in the 10 newly acquired EMBO barangays from the City of Makati (per a Supreme Court final decision).

EMBO stands for Enlisted Men’s Barrio. The 10 so-called EMBO barangays are Comembo, Cembo, East Rembo, Pembo, South Cembo, Pitogo, Post Proper Northside, Post Proper Southside, Rizal, and West Rembo.

On August 31, Mayor Maria Laarni “Lani” L. Cayetano, just four months after the decision of the High Tribunal, lead the distribution of birthday cash gifts to an initial 271 seniors of the EMBO villages. She assured those who were not able to receive their cash gifts will be handed over on a house-to-house basis as Taguig City has been doing.

Cayetano explained that Makati has not yet turned over the list of EMBO residents who are of senior age.

On September 1, City personnel started going the rounds of EMBO neighborhood to deliver senior’s birthday cash gifts, from Php3,000 to Php10,000, depending on age bracket. Centenarians receive Php100,000.

Before that, the Taguig local government opened on August 28 the filing of Certificates of Candidacy (CoCs) for the 2023 Barangay and Sanggunian Kabataan Elections (BSKE). Candidates from the EMBO barangays came also to file their CoCs.

On September 6, the mayor led the launch and rollout of the Taguig Mobile Diagnostic Van that will cater to patients, visiting every barangay on pre-determined schedules. To qualify for the van’s services, there are set of rules or requirements to be followed.

This time, it’s the students from the EMBO villages whom the Taguig local government unit (LGU) is training its sights on through the Lifeline Assistance for Neighbors In-Need (LANI) Scholarship Program. It was launched on August 22.

Taguig City’s Public Information Office (PIO) revealed in an announcement that 2,000 applicants answered the call for the LANI Scholarship Program from August 22 to 31, 2023. Students have until the 22nd of September to apply online.

In-person applications have two locations: the Taguig Scholarship Office at Senator Rene “Compañero” Cayetano Memorial Science and Technology High School (SRCCMSTHS) and at the 9th floor of the Taguig Satellite Office (TSO) at SM Aura Tower.

On September 6 the Taguig LGU started to accepting applicants for the LANI Scholarship Program, with 243 students Barangays Comembo, Cembo, South Cembo, East Rembo, and Pembo handing over their requirements.

Student hopefuls from Pitogo, Post Proper Northside, Post Proper Southside, Rizal, and West Rembo villages were expected to have already submitted their requirements in the following days.

Taguig LGU personnel said those who were not able to hand over their requirements will be given a new schedule, while those with incomplete documents were asked to return on September 13 for their complement requirements.

Obviously, every scholarship is good for it means free education. But what sets the LANI Scholarship Program is that it has no restrictive rules and regulations.

According to Taguig PIO, the City’s scholarships are not only for Senior High School graduates but to all of EMBO qualified residents.

“Taguig’s scholarship program is NOT limited to the upper 10% of the graduating class — but is open to all, and regardless of year levels. It is even open to those reviewing for licensure examinations and taking post graduate studies,” the announcement assured.

The City also said that residency or registration requirements will not be an issue as Taguig will recognize the residency and registration in EMBO barangays as valid and sufficient compliance.

No doubt, Mayor Lani Cayetano’s inclusive response to her constituents in the 38 barangays of the City, including in the EMBO villages, is worth a thousand words.(✓)
