KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia/Manila – One of Chinese tech titan Huawei Technologies’ corporate social responsibility’s (CSR) programs in the Philippines, the Huawei ICT Academy, continues to reap recognitions in the international arena.

Recall that Huawei founded by military engineer Ren Zhengfei established in the country its academy, partnering with many state colleges and universities (SUCs) to advance and promote 4th Industrial Revolution (IR 4.0) skills as technological innovations continue on leaps and bounds trajectory.

This time the Philippines has once again proven its excellence in the global tech arena as the country’s teams secured outstanding victories at the 9th Huawei ICT Competition Asia Pacific 2024-2025 Finals, held here on February 27, 2025.

Huawei Technologies’ competition brought together the brightest minds in Information and Communications Technology (ICT) from across the Asia-Pacific region, and the Philippines emerged as one of the top-performing nations, a statement the company sent to SDN – SciTech & Digital News.

The company said the “Philippine teams delivered exceptional performances, winning multiple awards across various categories, including Cloud Computing, Networking, Innovation, and Computing.

“Additionally, Filipino educators made their mark in the newly introduced Teaching Track, showcasing the country’s commitment to advancing ICT education and innovation,” the statement adds.

Huawei ICT Academy future-proofs Filipino students to thrive in IR4.0 environment

Philippines participation in the regional and international Huawei-organized and -sponsored ICT competitions apparently is the Chinese tech titan’s giving back to Filipinos and the nation.

Remember that the company based in the progressive city of Shenzhen, China, has been deeply involved in the Philippines’ ICT sector, especially its Huawei ICT Academy — that’s aside from its ICT products — that has and continues to partner with the country’s academic institutions, the likes, among others, of University of Santo Tomas (UST), De La Salle University (DLSU)-Taft Avenue, Manila, Adamson University, Mapua University, Batangas State University (BatSU), University of San Carlos (USC), University of the East (UE), and many others.

Huawei’s ICT Academy and its competitions is aimed at providing a platform for Filipino students to showcase their abilities and skills as future ICT professionals and also connects the company with the global academic community.

The Chinese maker of smartphones, broadband equipment, wearables, consumer products such as laptops, computers, smart devices, and others, conducts inter-school ICT competitions leading to the Philippine national edition where winners are sent abroad for the regional and global competitions.

Its integrated solutions are in four domains — telecom networks, IT, smart devices, and cloud services — as it commits to bringing digital to every person, home, and organization to advance and realize a fully connected, intelligent world.

As of December 2022, the Huawei ICT Academy in the Philippines has partnered with 10 universities and benefited 16,000 Filipino students.

In 2018, the tech titan launched the Huawei ICT Academy in the Philippines with 10 university partners, establishing 67 academies, empowered 16,000 students, 2,000 of them earning the company’s much-sought Certification Voucher.

Others accredited with the academy, some of the earliest, are University of Southeastern Philippines (USeP), Bulacan State University (BulSU), Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT), Lyceum University of the Philippines, Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP), and others.

Huawei is a leader in the ranks of the companies providing global ICT solutions. It operates in 170 countries and embraces 180,000 employees across the world.

Ms. Karenina “Karrie” Escueta-Buenafe, Huawei Philippines public relations manager, said the ICT Academy, which runs in many other countries, too, and its other activities like tree-planting gives back to the Philippines as part of its CSR.

Officials of universities accredited in the Huawei ICT Academy welcomed their participation in the program as vehicle for their students to be prepared in facing the challenges raised by IR 4.0 as technological innovations come in exponential rate.

So, essentially the academy is Huawei’s share in future-proofing Filipino engineering students to give them a fighting chance in the highly competitive local and global ICT opportunities.

In April 2010, Huawei surpassed a European tech company to become the world’s No. 1 leader in telecom equipment manufacture and supply in the ICT industry.

In the micro level, the ICT Academy cultivates local IT talent and help students prepare for employment. As for the macro level, Huawei aims to fill the global ICT skills gap. (☆)
