(SDN) — HUAWEI Philippines continues to be a consistent practitioner of the giving-back to the Philippines for its success in the country.

As part of the China technology giant’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) raised to a high level, the Shenzhen-based firm has been implementing in the country its global Seeds for the Future Program and ICT Academy partnership initiatives.

The year 2019 marks the fifth year of the activity in the Philippines, but globally it’s already 11 years.

And in that five years, Huawei Philippines has been sending select batches of Filipino students to Beijing, China, to participate in the Seeds for the Future Program, which provides the lucky students (well, they actually created their luck) in technology and science the opportunity to participate in the international study program.

Ms. Karenina “Karrie” Escueta-Buenafe, public relations manager of Huawei Philippines, presented the 10 students to select members of the Manila media on October 19 at the Ascott Bonifacio Global City, Taguig City, Metro Manila. They are the latest and fifth group in the program.

They students are: Gilene Christelle Lugtu and Richmond Roi Rodriguez, BS ECE, Ateneo De Manila University (AdeMU); Adrian Charles Mendoza and Ian Benedict Ona, BS Computer Science; Jean Miguel Antoine Santos and Seeta Jain, BS IS and BS CS, Mapua University; Noel Daniel Seldura, BS IT, University of San Jose Recoletos-Cebu/Smart Sweep Winner; and Danielle Joie Rodriguez, Allan Sambrano and Patrick John Llamoso, BSBA, Far Eastern University (FEU) and second place winner of the Department of Information and Communications Technology’s (DICT) Philippine Startup Challenge.

“This is our fifth trip in five years and a total of fifty students from the Philippines are now members of Huawei Seeds for the Future Program. We hope to continue the program in the years to come because there are so many deserving and talented students in the Philippines. This is our contribution to local talent development,” says Escueta-Buenafe, head of Huawei Seeds Program in the Philippines.

Seeds for the Future is Huawei’s Global CSR Program started in 2008. The program seeks to develop local ICT talent, enhance knowledge transfer, promote greater understanding of and interest in the telecommunications sector, and improve and encourage regional building and participation in the digital community.

 History and Partner Schools

The Philippines joined Seeds for the Future program in 2015 starting with two partner schools, Ateneo de Manila University (AdMU) and Mapua University. Since then, Huawei Philippines have signed partnerships with De La Salle University, Smart Sweep and with the Department of Information and Communication Technology-Philippine Start-UP Challenge Competition. These partnerships gave opportunities to students coming from other parts of Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao to join the program.

Program Offering

Huawei Seeds for the Future Work-Study Program offers undergraduate students an opportunity to travel to China for a two-week period. During the first week, participants will be in Beijing for an immersive introduction to Chinese language, culture and arts.

The following week, participants will be in Shenzhen, and work with Huawei Team in Huawei’s Global Headquarters, learning about Huawei’s international culture, strategy, and values, and receive technical training from some of the finest professionals in the industry. Travel and accommodations are provided by Huawei.

What the Seeds Say

“This is a once in a lifetime experience, it’s a trip that you will cherish and wish to repeat again,” said Jeremy Macrohon, Batch 2015, the pioneer batch of Huawei Philippines Seeds.

Hillary Fong Batch 2016 said: “I learned a lot during the trip. Huawei opens opportunities to learn and experience how to work in a multicultural environment. I am now working in Huawei Philippines and I hope to visit Huawei Headquarters once more.” (SDN/Karrie Escueta-Buenafe)
