(SDN) — WORLD CUP QATAR 2022’s Education City Stadium (ECS) has been completed.

To celebrate the milestone, the Arab State of Qatar presented on Tuesday, June 22, the third venue for the FIFA World Cup 2022, which Muslim country will host.

As the global pandemic novel coronavirus continues to disrupt practically all facets of life across the world, the presentation was conducted virtually, marked by its dedication to front-line workers fighting Covid-19.

His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, the Emir of the small-but-awash-with-wealth Arab and Muslim country delivered a message for the presentation.

He used the occasion to commend those who are fighting to help save lives from the pandemic, describing front-liners as “champions.”

“As we celebrate the completion of Education City Stadium, the third venue for the World Cup 2022, we greet the champions of these times: the medical staff and all the staff of the teams working on the front-line against the Covid-19 pandemic who have saved the lives of many people and brought back hope to them. We thank you and we support you,” Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad emphasizes.

The Qatari Emir looked forward to everyone watching personally the FIFA World Cup 2020 in the eight stadiums where the games will be played, apparently wishing and hoping the dreaded unseen enemy of the world — the novel coronavirus — would have been defeated.

“As the world begins to open up, it is through your courage, dedication and sincerity that we truly believe in better days to come, the days when we will enjoy together watching the stars of the game in our stadiums,” he adds.

Further, Emir Sheikh Tamin bin Hamad assured his country and his people’s readiness to welcome guests from abroad to watch the grand soccer event.

“Qatar is looking forward, and more excited and enthusiastic than ever, to welcome guests from all over the world for an exceptional World Cup,” he says.

In an article on The Peninsula, an English language news daily in Qatar, it was learned that the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy together with FIFA (the world body overseeing soccer events) have chosen to build seven stadiums and one fully refurbished. The eight stadiums will host the games.

The article pointed out that the Education City Stadium is located at the Education City, headquarters of the Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development.

Education City is also the home of Qatar’s leading universities and research and development (R&D) institutions.

The ECS turned out to be the first to gain a 5* rating under the Global Sustainability Assessment System owing to its environmentally-friendly design and build. It can accommodate up to 40,000 spectators.

Here’s how it is described in the article on The Peninsula:

“Diamond in the Desert”

“The facade of the stadium features triangles that form complex, diamond-like geometrical patterns which appear to change color with the sun’s movement across the sky. Like diamonds, the stadium’s design represents quality, durability and resilience – and will become something to be treasured, both for the memories it holds and its future value to the country.”

Qatar’s hosting of the World Cup 2022 starting on November 21 now has three tournament-ready stadiums, the first the redeveloped Khalifa International Stadium in 2017 and last year’s inauguration of Al-Janoub Stadium.

Expected to be completed by end-2020 are Al-Rayyan Stadium and Al-Bayt Stadium.

The Education City Stadium as planned will help preserve the legacy of World Cup Qatar 2022 abroad because the ECS’s modular tier will be removed after the games, the capacity reduced to 20,000 seats. Qatar will donate those seats that will be taken out to countries that have no sporting infrastructure. (SDN)
