The National Research Council of the Philippines (NRCP) takes on the theme, “Pagbangon at Pananaig: National Recovery and Rebuilding” for its Annual Scientific Conference and 88th General Membership Assembly (GMA) on March 10, 2020 via an online platform.
The theme is in support to the global initiative as countries rapidly take steps to respond and rebuild from the Covid-19 pandemic.
NRCP’s event will feature a plenary and parallel sessions regarding recovery on the perspective of economics, governance, health sciences, and the humanities. Expected outputs are recommendations and insights that can guide policy-making in identifying priorities that could help secure the well-being of the nation and its people
NRCP is one of the three councils under the wings of the Department of Science and Technoloy (DOST).
The agency invited Secretary Carlos G. Dominguez of the Department of Finance (DOF) to serve as the keynote speaker. As such, he will provide updates and insights about the national government’s strategies to reviving the economy including financial mechanisms and stimulus package.
On the other hand, DOST Secretary Fortunato T. de la Peña, a former president of NRCP, will officially open the convention.
Other invited speakers are Dr. Ernesto Pernia, former National Economic Development Authority (NEDA) secretary-general; Dr. Mahar K. Mangahas, Social Weather Station (SWS) president; Dr. Mahar A. Lagmay, Project NOAH executive director; Dr. Rosario G. Manasan, Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS) former senior research fellow; and Dr. Resil B. Mojares, National Artist and Professor Emeritus at the University of San Carlos (USC) in Cebu.
Typical highlights of the GMA are the election of new members of the NRCP Governing Board, recognition of Achievement Awardees, and the conduct of Annual Business Meeting.
Dr. Gregorio E. H. Del Pilar, chair of the Social Sciences Division, is the current president of NRCP. He will give his report on the year 2020 and will lead all the activities of the 2021 GMA.
DOST Undersecretary Rowena Cristina L. Guevara will likewise provide updates regarding the agency’s research and development (R&D programs aligned with the country’s recovery program.
Around 1,300 member-researchers including guests from the Congress and Senate are expected to attend this virtual assembly. (✓)
