Cotabato City Division Runs Away with 67 Gold Medals, Php150-K as Overall Champion of BARMMAA Meet 2023

COTABATO CITY, May 29, 2023 (SDN) — After five days of intense battles, Cotabato City Division’s athletes seized 67 gold medals, emerging as the Overall or Grand Champion of BARMMAA Meet 2023.

In so doing, the grand champion took home Php150,000 cash prize, a tall trophy, plus the honor and the bragging rights.

Mercifully, the weather cooperated in the event’s final day as the sun shone its brightest, enabling the completion of open field sports suspended by strong rains on May 28.

The medal tally for the Overall Championship of the Bangsamoro “Palaro” (Sporting Event) combined the Elementary and Secondary levels’ results, with gold medal as the standard as always.

Participants in this year’s BARMMAA sports spectacle from 11 schools divisions of the region were 8,132, inclusive of coaches and other officials and 4,738 athletes.

The young athletes competed in 22 sports.

With its 67 gold, 54 silver, and 47 bronze medals (for a total haul of 67 medals), the boys and girls of the host city division trounced the 10 other delegations of athletes from the provinces, cities, and Special Geographic Area (SGA) of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).

Ministry of Basic, Higher and Technical Education (BARMM-MBHTE) Minister Mohagher M. Iqbal led the awarding of winners’ trophies and cash prizes during the Closing Ceremony of BARMM Athletic Association (BARMMAA) held from May 25 to 29.

Coming in after Cotabato City is Maguindanao II Division as 1st Runner Up with its 50 gold, 55 silver, and 41 bronze medals. Trophy and Php80,000 came with the ranking.

Maguindanao I Division — 33 gold, 52 silver, and 57 bronze medals — took 2nd Runner Up honors, worth Php70,000 and a trophy.

For the 3rd Runner Up, the honors belonged to Tawi-Tawi from the island component areas of the Bangsamoro region. It’s worth Php60,000 and a trophy.

Meanwhile, in the Secondary Level, Cotabato City Division took the championship crown, with 42 gold, 36 silver, and 38 bronze medals. It won Php80,000 cash prize and a trophy.

1st Runner Up is Maguindanao II Division — 32 gold, 37 silver, and 25 bronze medals. It was good for Php50,000 and a trophy.

In 2nd Runner up is Lamitan City Division — 27 gold, 15 silver, and 19 bronze medals and netted Php30,000 and a trophy.

Tawi-Tawi is at 3rd Runner Up — 21 gold, 18 silver, and 18 bronze medals, winning Php20,000 and a trophy.

In the Elementary Level, champion is Cotabato City Division for its 25 gold, 18 silver, and 9 bronze medals. It’s good for Php80,000 and a trophy.

1st Runner Up honors went to Maguindanao II, 18 gold, 18 silver, and 16 bronze medals. Its delegation got Php50,000 and a trophy.

Maguindanao I is at 2nd Runner Up with its 17 gold, 23 silver, and 11 bronze medals. The ranking came with Php30,000 and a trophy.

For 3rd Runner Up, it is Lanao del Sur — 11 gold, 10 silver, and 6 bronze medals, winning Php 20,000 and a trophy.

The BARMMAA Meet 2023 organizers led by MBHTE also came up with Special Awards, such as:

  • Most Discipline Delegation — Lanao del Sur II Division, Trophy and Php20,000 in cash,
  • Most Eco-Friendly Delegation — Marawi City Division, Trophy and Php20,000,
  • Best in Saludo — Maguindanao I Division, Trophy and Php20,000,
  • Best in Uniform — Lamitan City Division, Trophy and Php20,000,
  • Best in Records and Management — Cotabato City Division, Trophy and Php20,000,
  • Best Host School — Tamontaka Central School, Trophy and Php20,000, and
  • Most Friendly Delegation — SGA, Trophy and Php20,000

Other delegations that did not get into the winning lists also got a cash windfall of Php20,000 each.
