COTABATO CITY — The Bangsamoro Ministry of Basic, Higher and Technical Education (MBHTE) headed by Education Minister and Member of Parliament (MP) Mohagher M. Iqbal continued its delivery of Teahers’ Kits and Learners’ Kits to schools in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).
Since his assumption in 2019 of the BARMM’s education ministry, Iqbal, who wears many hats in the Bangsamoro peace process, has been putting in place several reform initiatives.
Among them are the hiring of teaching and non-teaching personnel, construction of new school buildings to add more classrooms, rehabilitation of school edifices, provisions of IT equipment and other devices, school supplies, including Teachers’ Kits, and Learners’ Kits, as well as MBHTE-designed armchairs.
Iqbal, a member of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) policy-making body, the Central Committee, has been visiting various schools divisions of the autonomous region, including on the island provinces and municipalities.
The Bangsamoro region, established in 2018 by the Bangsamoro Organic Law (BOL) to implement the 2014 Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro (CAB), is made up of the provinces of Basilan, Lanao del Sur, Maguindanao del Sur, Maguindanao del Norte, Sulu, and Tawi-Tawi, the cities of Cotabato, Lamitan, and Marawi, as well as the Special Geographic Area’s (SGA) 63 barangays or villages that voted “Yes” in a plebiscite in February 2019 to be under the BARMM jurisdiction.
According to the Philippine Atlas BARMM has 4,404,288 people. It has 116 municipalities: Basilan, 11 municipalities; Lanao del Sur, 39; undivided Maguindanao, 36; Sulu, 19; and Tawi-Tawi, 11. Its component cities are Cotabato (the regional center and capital) in Maguindanao; Lamitan in Basilan; and Marawi in Lanao del Sur.
This month an MBHTE team traveled to Sulu to deliver 6,891 Teachers’ Kits and 343 Learners’ Kits distributed in the province’s schools division. The delivery was made on behalf of Project IQBAL.
