MANILA, April 9, 2024 (SDN) — President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr. today, April 9, sent his warm greetings to Muslims as the Islamic world marks the end of Ramadan.

The President’s felicitations through the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF) headed by Secretary Sabuddin N. Abdurahim came on the heels of the joint declaration the Bangsamoro Darul Ifta (House of Opinion) and the NCMF on Eid’l Fitr, the Festival of Breaking the Fast.

“As we mark the end of the holy month of Ramadan with Eidul Fitr, may we sustain our commitment of extending compassion, of service and love to our fellows, especially those who are suffering and in need,” Marcos said in his message.

The President, with his family and the whole Filipino nation, he wishes “our Muslim brothers and sisters a blessed and joyful celebration of Eidul Fitr.”

He described the end-of-Ramadan occasion of having spirituality and festivities, and “solemn time to thank the Almighty for the many blessings that have been bestowed upon us and to ask for His continued Guidance and Providence as we proceed in our life’s journeys.”

Islam has only two major festivals, Eid’l Fitr and Eid’l Adha (the Feast of Sacrifice) during the annual Hajj, the pilgrimage to Makkah, Saudi Arabia.

At 8:10 p.m., today, Tuesday, the Bangsamoro Government’s social media page on Facebook announced that the Shawwal crescent moon was sighted.

Since Hijri, the Islamic calendar, is lunar based, the crescent moon of each month must be sighted to determine the first day.

Thus, the NCMF and the Bangsamoro Darul Ifta headed by Grand Mufti Abdulrauf Guialani deployed teams in strategic areas this evening to sight the crescent of Shawwal, the month that follows the holy month of Ramadan.

“Bangsamoro Grand Mufti Abdulrauf Guialani of the Bangsamoro Darul Ifta has announced that the moon has been sighted — signifying that Eid’l Fitr (Feast of Breaking the Fast) will be tomorrow, Wednesday (April 10),” the announcement said.

Incidentally, the Philippine government declaration on Eid’l Fitr jibes with Saudi Arabia, which earlier declared April 10 as the first day of Eid’l Fitr celebrations, which in some Muslim countries is at least five days.
Each of the two Eid festivals start with an early morning mass prayer in mosques or in open field spaces. Every Eid celebration features the special prayers, friends and relatives visit each other, there are gift-giving as well and giving of charity.
Before the morning prayers, or even during the Ramadan month, each member of a household, including children, must give Zadaqatul Fitr, which is compulsory. It is given in the form of rice for rice-eating people (2 and 1/2 kilos, or the equivalent price in money. Recipients should be the poor and needy.

Here’s the presidential message’s transcipt by SDN in full:

“Assalamu laikum!

“Together with my family and the entire Filipino nation, I wish our Muslim brothers and sisters a blessed and joyful celebration of Eidul Fitr.

“This sacred occasion of spirituality and festivities is a solemn time to thank the Almighty for the many blessings that have been bestowed upon us and to ask for His continued Guidance and Providence as we proceed in our life’s journeys.

“As we mark the end of the holy month of Ramadan with Eidul Fitr, may we sustain our commitment of extending compassion, of service and love to our fellows, especially those who are suffering and in need.

“That selflessness, empathy, and generosity, values that we share across all faiths also guide our every word, action and endeavor so we may bring forth a more harmonious and kinder society under our ‘Bagong Pilipinas’.

“Once again, I wish everyone a blessed and joyful celebration of Eidul Fitr.”

Eid Mubarak!” (/)
