ISULAN, Sultan Kudarat (SDN) June 30, 2024 — The Innovation Council of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) has been a science, technology, and innovation’s (STI) blessing to higher education institutions (HEIs) and state colleges and universities (SCUs).

If you are unaware of what’s the Innovation Council, it’s the Philippine Council on Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development (DOST-PCIEERD). Headed by Dr. Enrico “Eric” C. Paringit, executive director, PCIEERD is headquartered at the DOST Compound in Bicutan, Taguig City, Metro Manila.

Being based in what people from Mindanao and the Visayas pejoratively dubbed “Imperial Manila”, PCIEERD has not been shy about extending its reach outward, beyond Luzon, the Philippines’ biggest island and the center of governance and economic and business activities.

Truth to tell, the Innovation Council has been living up to its mandates, and its impacting the academe, industry, and community as the PCIEERD head reminded hundreds of attendees during the agency’s 14th anniversary celebration on June 28 at the Dusit Thani Manila, Makati City, Metro Metro Manila.

“Making an impact is essential in the rapidly changing fields of science and technology to guarantee that the people we fund are aware of the results of our efforts. To make sure that the scientific projects we support have a major positive impact on the Philippinee and the world community, we evaluate the research’s applicability and relevance to society,” Paringit emphasized.

As part of its impact on the academe, the Innovation Council has funding the establishment of state-of-the-art laboratories in higher education institutes (HEIs) and state colleges and universities (SUCs).

Presently, PCIEERD already has laboratories in some HEIs in Mindanao for research and development (R&D) to come up with products that can be commercialized and be source of income to adoptors.

Tomorrow, July 1, PCIEERD will join and co-launch with Sultan Kudarat State University (SKSU) here at their Main Campus two state-of-the-art laboratories aimed at creating and producing products by harnessing the power of technology. Part of goal, perhaps, is to come up with solutions for problems that Filipinos faced in their everyday lives to ease up their burden.

For what are technologies for if not aimed at improving people’s lives!

These are the Forensic Molecular Biology Center (FMBC) and HEIRIT and the Sustainable Ecosystem for the Promotion and Advancement of Promising Products (STEP APP). Both projects belonged to PCIEERD’s Institution Development Program (IDP) which is focused on empowering HEIs and SUCs to leverage technology.

Details of the two projects will be laid down during the launching ceremony. — EDD K. USMAN (✓)
