COTABATO CITY (SDN) — President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr. has found a replacement for Vice President Inday Sara Duterte as secretary of the Department of Education (DepEd)
He is Senator Juan Edgardo “Sonny” M. Angara, “champion of significant educational reforms since joining the Senate in 2013,” the Philippine Communications Office (PCO) announced on Tuesday, July 2.
Marcos announced to the Cabinet his choice on Tuesday, July 2, during their 17th Meeting, saying the senator accepted the DepEd position. “Sonny has agreed to take on the brief of the Department of Education,” the President said.
It can be recalled that Duterte quit the DepEd on June 19. Her resignation takes effect on July 19 as she gave the President enough time to find her successor.
And it’s the son of former Senate president Edgardo Angara, from 1993 to 1995. Sonny, the son, brings a wealth of feats to DepEd, among them, Master of Laws from Harvard University, Bachelor of Law from the University of the Philippines, and Bachelor of Science in Economics from the London School of Economics.
The choice was not lost on the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), with Minister Mohagher M. Iqbal, head of the Ministry of Basic, Higher and Technical Education (MBHTE) issuing a statement welcoming the younger Angara’s selection.
Iqbal congratulated Duterte’s successor on behalf of the MBHTE, one of the 15 primary ministries of the Bangsamoro government, the biggest with over 60,000 employees, more than 25,000 of them teachers.
He said that on behalf of the MBHTE, “I extend my heartfelt congratulations to Senator Sonny Angara on his appointment as the new Secretary of the (DepEd). This is a momentous occasion, and we recognize Senator Angara’s dedication and commitment to advancing education in our nation.”
The BARMM education chief acknowledged the incoming DepEd secretary’s extensive experience and proven track record in championing educational reforms, making him an excellent choice for this crucial role.
Iqbal, a vital cog in the wheels of the Bangsamoro peace process, recalled Angara’s important role in the passage of the law establishing the BARMM.
“As one of the champions of the Bangsamoro Basic Law (now the Bangsamoro Organic Law), Senator Angara’s efforts in promoting peace and development have not gone unnoticed. His commitment to inclusive and progressive policies will undoubtedly enrich our educational system and support the growth of all communities,” he said.
MBHTE wishes the senator success in his new journey
On the part of the MBHTE, Iqbal said the education ministry “looks forward to collaborating closely with Secretary Angara to achieve significant educational outcomes not only within the BARMM but across the entire Philippines. Together, we aim to create a robust educational system that equips our youth with the knowledge, skills, and values necessary for their personal growth and the progress of our nation.”
Iqbal’s message continues:
“We wish Secretary Angara every success in his new role and assure him of our unwavering support and cooperation. We are committed to working closely with him as we strive towards our shared vision of a brighter future for education in the country.
“We also extend our heartfelt gratitude to President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Romualdez Marcos, Jr. for appointing Senator Angara to this position. This decision reflects a deep understanding of the needs of our education system and a commitment to ensuring a bright future for our nation through quality education.”
Angara’s legislative work includes the Universal Access to Quality Tertiary Education Act and the Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013 (K-12), the PCO said. He is the chair of the Senate Committee on Games, Amusements and Sports. — EDD K. USMAN (/)
