(SDN) July 8, 2024 — Calls for assistance for distressed journalist Julmunir “Munir” Jannaral (Manila Times, PTV4), have gained attention from the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF)-South Luzon headed by Regional Director Saleha Pangarungan Sacar.
SDN — SciTech and Digital News learned about this on Saturday, July 6, as the NCMF-South Luzon head gave orders to one of the chiefs of the office, Alexander “Toto” Deron to communicate and verify with Desk Officer Elaine Suarez, of Felix Outpost, Barangay San Andres, Cainta, Rizal, about the journalist’s predicament.
SDN got wind of Munir’s difficult predicament through another journalist, Neil Adrales Alcober of The Daily Tribune, who got the information from a former schoolmate. Neil’s former schoolmate contacted him upon seeing Munir at the Barangay Outpost as they are common friends of Munir on Facebook.
Dr. Jun Alonto Datu-Ramos, regional director NCMF-National Capital Region, also responded with an alarm on his Facebook page.
While still in Cotabato City, after being informed by Neil, SDN reached out first to Jadjurie Arasa on Thursday evening, July 4, of the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF), who said he was able to chat with a brother of Munir and a brother-in-law and informed them of the situation.
Latest update shows that from Desk Officer Suarez of the Felix Outpost of Barangay San Andres, Cainta, Rizal, Munir’s family in the municipality had already fetched him and returned him to their residence. He was brought there at the barangay office since last week for assistance.
Today, Monday, Munir will be brought to the Cainta Municipal Hospital by the barangay’s Rescue Unit as he is scheduled for laboratory tests, Desk Officer Suarez said.
Regional Director Pangarungan Sacar told SDN she had instructed Chief Leizel Meneses to lead a team from NCMF-South Luzon to visit Munir and bring with them some hygiene supplies and food stuff.
She said she plans to have the situation referred to NCMF Secretary Sabuddin N. Abdurahim for appropriate response.
The NCMF-South Luzon head also started off a contribution for Munir in the amount of Php2,000 from her pocket, hoping other Good Samaritan will follow through.

According to Desk Officer Suarez, Munir’s predicament started last week when he was brought to the barangay, apparently for him to be taken to a Home for the Aged in Cainta.
She said the family of Munir changed their mind and, instead, fetched him from the Felix Outpost of the barangay (village) and brought him home.
Through the directive of Regional Director Pangarungan Sacar, the Muslim Consultative Council of Cainta local government unit (LGU), Abdurahman Montero Navalle also met with Munir to assess his situation.
