COTABATO CITY (SDN) — On August 10, 2023, Vice President and Education Secretary Inday Sarah Duterte launched the new MATATAG Curriculum, or K-to-10, based on Department of Education (DepEd) Order No. 010 s. 2024.
That was a year and nine days of her resignation from the education department, which took effect on July 19, 2024.
At the launch of the K-to-10, it was learned that its launch was an indictment of the failure of the K-to-12 Program, which was launch with much fanfare in 2013, supposed to be a “comprehensive reform” of the Philippine education system. Alas, it appeared it was not meant to be.
Now, the ball is in the hands of Duterte’s replacement, the appointee of President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr., former senator Sonny Angara, the new DepEd chief. Under his leadership the DepEd will oversee the implementation of the MATATAG Curriculum.
Around a decade after its introduction, noisy calls were fielded to review K-to-12, as graduates of Grade 12 were not able to immediately find employment, the objective of Republic Act No. 10533, also known as the “Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013.
It was made clear at the launch of K-to-10 that it was not meant, however, to replace the K-to-12. It was to be piloted in some selected schools.
The MATATAG Curriculum again carries the good old GMRC (good manners and right conduct), Makabansa, and Peace Education integrated into it. It was crafted for two years by educators from the public and private sectors.
Now, over at the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), the Ministry of Basic, Higher and Technical Education (MBHTE) headed by Minister Mohagher M. Iqbal has announced its implementation DepEd Order No. 010 s. 2024, the Policy Guidelines on the Implementation of the MATATAG Curriculum using the Bangsamoro Basic Education Curriculum Framework for Kindergarten, Grade 1, Grade 4, and Grade 7 starting School Year 2024-2025.
The Bangsamoro region, established in 2018 by the Bangsamoro Organic Law (BOL) to implement the 2014 Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro (CAB), is made up of the provinces of Basilan, Lanao del Sur, Maguindanao del Sur, Maguindanao del Norte, Sulu, and Tawi-Tawi, the cities of Cotabato, Lamitan, and Marawi, as well as the Special Geographic Area’s (SGA) 63 barangays or villages that voted “Yes” in a plebiscite in February 2019 to be under the BARMM jurisdiction. With the recent plebiscite at SGA, the BARMM now has eight new municipalities as residents voted “Yes”.
According to the Philippine Atlas BARMM has 4,404,288 people. It has 116 municipalities (plus eight newly established under the SGA: Basilan, 11 municipalities; Lanao del Sur, 39; undivided Maguindanao, 36; Sulu, 19; and Tawi-Tawi, 11. Its component cities are Cotabato (the regional center and capital) in Maguindanao; Lamitan in Basilan; and Marawi in Lanao del Sur.
In its announcement, BARMM education ministry said all other grade levels shall remain, implementing the Most Essential Learning Competencies adopting the recalibrated time allotment stated in the above-mentioned DepEd Order.
Contextualized lesson guides (at least for the first two weeks of the incoming school year) for Kindergarten, Grade 1, Grade 4, and Grade 7 shall be made accessible to the teachers starting July 28, 2024. Lesson guides for the succeeding weeks of the first and second quarters will be available as soon as possible.
