(SDN) August 1, 2024– The leadership of the United Bangsamoro Justice Party (UBJP) led by Chief Minister Ahod Balawag “Al-Haj Murad” Ebrahim, UBJP president, has assured they are one with the people of Sul in the Bangsamoro quest for inclusive socio-economic and political change.

On July 28, the top leaders of the UBJP, the political arm of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), including Executive Vice President/Vice President for Central Mindanao Mohagher M. Iqbal, Secretary General Abdulrauf Macacua, other party stalwarts, and supporters, went to Jolo, Sulu, for their hugely successful provincial General Assembly.

More or less 100,000 Tausug people attended the assembly held at the Notre Dame of Jolo College (NDJC), which the UBJP truly appreciated.

Grateful for the acceptance and being embraced by the people of Sulu as the attendees demonstrated, the UBJP issued a formal statement to acknowledge it, describing it as “unprecedented”.

“The United Bangsamoro Justice Party warmly extends our profound gratitude and highest respects to the tens of thousands of Tausugs who attended the Sulu Provincial Chapter Assembly last July 28, 2024, at the Notre Dame of Jolo College (NDJC). Such massive show of people’s participation from all walks of life — women, children, youth, elderly, Ulama, mujahideens, teachers, indigenous peoples, settlers, students, fisherfolks, farmers, vendors — was unprecedented and a welcome surprise even to our very own party leaders,” the statement reads.

UBJP’s statement singled out former congressman Bensaudi O. Tulawie, former mayor Abdulwahid Sahidulla, the Partido Federal ng Pilipinas (PFP) for their presence, as well as the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) for providing peace and security.

“We extend our deepest gratitude to the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) for their unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety of our party officials and members during the assembly. We are equally indebted to Notre Dame of Jolo College, particularly its President, Fr. Eduardo M. Santuyo OMI, for providing UBJP a safe and secure space, when others refused to welcome us out of fear of reprisals,” the statement continues.

As the MILF’s political arm, the UBJP assured its enduring alliance and solidarity with the Tausug people.

“The Provincial Assembly is just the beginning of our enduring alliance and solidarity with the people of Sulu. UBJP is here to protect you and promote your interest. Thank you for choosing UBJP to be your political party in the Bangsamoro Parliament. With your support, UBJP is determined to emerge victorious in the first parliamentary election, In Sha Allah,” the statement concludes. — EKU

“Despite the claim of the powers that be that Sulu is under a single iron fist, UBJP resolutely ventured to Sulu driven by our genuine recognition of the Tausug people as integral to the Bangsamoro struggle and the peace process. The gallant mujahideens of Lupah Sug played a leading role in our decade-long jihad for freedom and self-determination. We, in the UBJP, stand with the people of Sulu in our quest for inclusive socio-economic and political change. We are one with you in our struggle to dismantle the chains of oppression and injustice.

“We thank former congressman Bensaudi O. Tulawie, former Mayor Abdulwahid Sahidullah and the Partido Federal ng Pilipinas (PFP) for their presence and declaration of support for UBJP. We extend our deepest gratitude to the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) for their unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety of our party officials and members during the assembly. “UBJP sends its heartfelt congratulations to the Sulu Provincial Chapter whose concerted efforts and hard work, along with countless committee members, made the Provincial Assembly a resounding success. We extend our sincere apologies for any unforeseen shortcomings caused by the massive and unexpected turnout of multitudes of people. We appeal for understanding and sobriety as
UBJP strives to welcome constructive criticisms as lessons to learn and grow into a mature political party.

“UBJP is determined to expand, consolidate and protect its members and empower its candidates to secure a resounding victory in the upcoming election. At stake here is not only the continuity of the peace process but also the preservation of the institutional and political reforms that we are beginning to entrench in the Bangsamoro homeland.

“The Provincial Assembly is just the beginning of our enduring alliance and solidarity with the people of Sulu. UBJP is here to protect you and promote your interest. Thank you for choosing UBJP to be your political party in the Bangsamoro Parliament. With your support, UBJP is determined to emerge victorious in the first parliamentary election, In Sha Allah.” (/)
