ST. GERRARD CONSTRUCTION HQ, Pasig City (SDN) — Businesswoman Sarah Discaya, the mayoralty bet of Team Kaya This!, has committed to eliminate the cap on students’ grades to increase the number of the city’s scholarship beneficiaries.

She told journalists that presently as required, students in the city need to achieve a rated grade of 95 percent in order to qualify as scholar. Ate Sarah thought that the grade rating is difficult for many students to achieve.

“Ate Sarah” (Sister Sarah) as she is fondly called by Pasigueños, along with lawyer Christian “Ian” Sia, congressional bet of Team Kaya This!, held her first-ever press conference here on Friday, October 11, since she filed her Certificate of Candidacy (COC) on October 7, gamely fielding questions from members of traditional or mainstream media and those from social media.

Needless to say, she appeared to have overcome her nerves facing a gauntlet of mainstream reporters for the first time since she filed her COC. Now, she is officially an aspirant.

One of the key moments here was when Discaya, also a philanthropist, revealed she challenged the incumbent mayor, Vico Sotto, of this urban jungle to agree to and sign “A Peace Covenant” for a peaceful, orderly, and clean elections in the city on May 12, 2024.

Information relayed to reporters on Friday by a political adviser of Sotto indicated he has not yet read the Covenant which his office received the same day.

That’s aside, of course, from challenging him for the city’s mayoralty post. In fact, Ate Sarah and her husband Curlee have credited the Pasig mayor for their decision to run against him.

Perhaps it was her desire to elevate the local election process from the campaigning to the voting to the counting to a higher level until the final result is known that she proposed the Covenant.

Another key moment was her announcement on her planned education reform that includes increasing the number of scholarship beneficiaries without a cap on their grades.

Ate Sarah revealed that in the current city administration, students have to have a rating of 95 percent to qualify for the scholarship.

She said if she is elected, she will place no cap on students’ grades: every student will be accepted because higher grades do not necessarily indicate success in life.

Sia, a former city councilor, cited as example Curlee, Ate Sarah’s husband, who had “pasang awa” (borderline passing) grades.

Look at Curly now, Sia pointed out, apparently referencing him as a very successful businessman and is said to be one of the city billionaires through their earning from St. Gerrard Construction Corporation, a Quadruple “A” company, and other business interests.

From the classic rags-to-riches story, the Discaya couple now lives truly comfortable, and “they are sufficient” as Ate Sarah has said.

Ate Sarah said her top three concerns, if God gives her the chance to serve her beloved city and the Pasigueños, are health, education, and the senior citizens.

She said they are still ironing out their complete platform for the coming political exercise.

Two of her bets for city councilor are former Miss Universe Shamcy Supsup-Lee and movie actress Ara Mina. (♡)
