PASIG CITY (SDN) — Crime does not pay because the long arm of the law always catches up with the bad guys.
It may not always happen immediately, but the government has resources, patience, and a resolute determination to do so in catching those who make a mockery of the law.
And in many cases the arrests of suspected criminals happen while they are doing things that do not necessarily look like perpetrating a crime.
On Saturday, November 2, the inevitable happened.
The Eastern Police District (EPD) under the leadership of Philippine National Police (PNP) Col. Villamor Q. Tuliao nabbed Abdulfahad Dirampa Malik, 35, also known as “Rex Fahad”, after engaging in a firefight with elements of the Pasig City police.
He said it happened in front of a coffee shop along Urbano Velasco Avenue in Barangay Pinagbuhatan in this urban community.
How it happened
Tuliao, who along with his officers, had a Meet & Greet session with members of the media and bloggers last week on Wednesday, said PNP-Pasig operatives were patrolling in the area when they chanced on a group of four men without helmets pushing two motorcycles.
This unsual scene apparently alerted the authorities’ suspicion, prompting them to act.
Their keen instinct acting automatically, two members of the barangay (village) security force and a policeman approached the suspicious group, subsequently asking what they were doing.
Tuliao, in a press conference after the incident, said one of the men, later identified as Malik, whom he tagged as the group’s alleged leader, drew his firearm, and fired shots at the police operative.
Malik missed the unidentified policeman but this forced the latter to fire back, hitting the suspect in the back.
His three other companions scampered to escape while their wounded companion was rushed to the Pasig City General Hospital (PCGH).
Tuliao related that while Malik was in the hospital a man who looked worried and intending to visit him was positively identified by the arresting PNP EPD officers as one of the four suspicious men they earlier accosted.
They subsequently arrested the man who was identified as Nikko Mariano.
At the same press conference, P/Col. Hendrix Mangaldan, chief of police of Pasig City, said they are still trying to determine if the two motorcycles were stolen as well as if Malik’s gun has a license.
In relation with the incident, the Pasig police contingent is now readying charges of attempted murder and violation of the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act of 2013 for filing at the Pasig City Prosecutor’s Office.
And for those who maybe are inclined to commit unlawful acts, know that the long arm of the law does not rest until justice is served. (✓)
