MARIKINA CITY (SDN) — Following the announcement of the Department of Education (DepEd), this city’s Mayor Maan Teodoro announced Sunday that there are no classes in all levels in public schools in the city, Monday and Tuesday (October 13 and 14).

On October 12, the DepEd announced the suspension of face-to-face classes in all of Metro Manila’s public schools. Metro Manila or National Capital Region (NCR) is comprised of 16 cities of one municipality. Based on a 2020 figure from the Philippine Atlas, the NCR has a population of 13,484,462 people.

In its announcement, DepEd noted the rising cases of influenza-like illnesses affecting learners and school personnel.

The Philippine Star quoted in its news report DepEd-NCR Director Jocelyn Andaya, who is also the concurrent officer-in-charge in the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Operations, as saying that suspension of face-to-face classes was necessary to make sure that learning is continuing even as the health and safety of students are prioritized.

“To provide time for disinfection, sanitation and building inspection, all face-to-face classes in public schools in the National Capital Region are suspended on Oct. 13 to 14, 2025,” Andaya said in the news report.

Over here in Marikina, Teodoro emphasized that to be cautious early on relating to the rise of flu cases and flu-like illnesses according to the reports of schools in the city and the recommendation of the City Health Office (CHO), “we will have two days of Health Break in all levels of public and private schools starting tomorrow, October 13, Monday, up to October 14, Tuesday.” She issued the order on Sunday, October 12.

“Ang hakbang na ito ay isang preemptive measure upang mapangalagaan ang kalusugan at kapakanan ng ating mga mag-aaral, guro, at kawani ng paaralan upang makaiwas sa pagkalat ng sakit at mabigyan ng pagkakataong makapagpahinga ang lahat,” Teodoro stresses.

(Translation: This step is a preemptive measure to safeguard the health and wellbeing of our learners. teacjers. and employees of schools to avoid the spread of disease and give opportunity to all to rest.)

“Habang naka-health break ang mga estudyante, isasagawa naman ang malawakang paglilinis at disinfection sa mga paaralan upang matiyak ang ligtas at maayos na pagbabalik-klase.”

(Translation: While the students are on a health break, a school-wide cleaning and disinfection of schools will be done to ensure the safe and orderly return to classes.)

The mayor advised those who are sick to stay home, rest, drink lots of water, and consult if there are symptoms.

“Mag-ingat po tayong lahat,” she pleaded. (Translation: Let’s all of us to be careful.) — EDD K. Usman (/)
