(SDN) — A Public Market will soon rise in the municipality of Barira, Maguindanao.

The planned building will add to the myriads of construction projects in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) the Ministry of the Interior and Local Government (MILG) is implementing since at least 2021.

Headed by Minister Naguib G. Sinarimbo, the MILG is front and center in the construction boom in the Bangsamoro (with due respect to the Ministry of Public Works or MPW). The former’s building projects include Municipal Halls, Philippine National Police (PNP) Stations, Public Markets, Integrated Public Terminals, desalination facilities, Barangay Halls, improvement of water systems, and others. Some have been completed and turned over to respective local government units (LGUs), and many others being built, under planning, scattered in several Bangsamoro communities.

The construction program of the MILG is covered under the BARMM’s Social Development Fund (SDF) and is strongly pushed and backed by BARMM Chief Minister Al-Hajj Murad Ebrahim.

Dividends of peace multiplies in BARMM

Along with socio-economic programs the BARMM is implementing, the construction projects of the MILG are what have been dubbed dividends of peace as a result of the 2014 Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro (CAB) the Philippine government signed with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF). The parties forged the CAB after over 17 years of peace negotiations, ending over four decades of war for independence which the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) started in the early 70s.

It was an internecine conflict pitting Filipinos against Filipinos that killed over 120,000 rebels, soldiers, non-combatants, and civilians, and destroyed infrastructures, agricultural lands, and public buildings, and houses.

And so it came to pass, the strife giving way to peace, hopefully for good.

With the CAB, it is time to reap the fruits of blood, sweat and tears that flower in many parts of Southern Philippines, or Mindanao.

And with Sinarimbo’s MILG, it started with the infrastructure projects.

“We are constructing another Public Market in partnership with the LGU led by Hon. Mayor Abdul Rauf D. Tomawis in the municipality of Barira, Maguindanao,” he said.

Barira is a part of the sprawling Camp Abubakar As-Siddique, the biggest camp of the MILF that straddles several municipalities in Maguindanao and Lanao del Sur, he noted.

“The MILG and the Bangsamoro Government, led by the Chief Minister Al-Hajj Murad Ebrahim, is committed to transforming these municipalities into vibrant economic hubs that can generate employment apart from providing these LGUs with non-tax revenue income streams thru the exercise of its corporate powers,” Sinarimbo pointed out during the signing of the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) for the planned Public Market with Tomawis.

Comprising the Bangsamoro region are Basilan, Lanao del Sur, Maguindanao, Sulu and Tawi-Tawi provinces, the cities of Cotabato, Lamitan, and Marawi as well as 63 villages in North Cotabato designated as Special Geographic Area (SGA) in North Cotabato province. (EKU) — (✓)
