Congratulatory Message from The Honourable Paul CHAN Mo-po, GBM, GBS, MH, JP, FCG HKFCG Financial Secretary of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region

HONG KONG, April 22, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — The Honourable Paul CHAN Mo-po, GBM, GBS, MH, JP, FCG HKFCG Financial Secretary of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region delivered a speech to The Hong Kong Chartered Governance Institute (HKCGI) and its members following the launch of the Institute’s new brand identity and revamped website in January 2022.

A Proud Fellow

The Financial Secretary, who has been a member of HKCGI for nearly 40 years and now a proud Fellow, referenced the timely rebranding of the Institute in the past year. Under a new HKEX Listing Rule, company secretaries are formally recognised as part of senior management in Hong Kong-listed companies. One of the Institute’s core missions is to help members navigate through the increasingly complex governance landscape in the global pursuit of purposeful governance.

Diversity in Members’ Expertise

The multi-faceted roles and responsibilities of the governance professionals are reflected in the Institute’s membership – the 6,800 members and nearly 3,000 students will continue to shape future developments in the corporate world.

A Financial Hub

The Institute is committed to promoting a gold standard in governance, its members’ diverse range of expertise will be invaluable in our concerted efforts to safeguard the city’s status as a leading international financial and commercial centre in the post-pandemic economy. In January, HKEX revised the Corporate Governance Code and Listing Rules to strengthen board independence and promote gender diversity in the boardroom. The Institute’s dedication in the promotion of global standards in reporting will engender confidence in global investors and businesses.

Emerging Trends

Last October, legislative amendments were passed that will make the Financial Reporting Council a full-fledged, independent regulatory body for the accounting profession. It will do so under a new name: The Accounting and Financial Reporting Council.  This will bring our accounting profession’s regulatory regime.

Conclusion

The robustness of our corporate governance regime has been recognised internationally. The Financial Action Task Force’s latest Mutual Evaluation Report commended our efforts in combating money laundering and terrorist financing, making Hong Kong the first jurisdiction in the Asia-Pacific region to achieve overall compliance.

HKCGI is recognised locally, regionally and internationally. Through its strategic goal to promote good governance, the Institute will continue to support the Government and contribute to a better post-pandemic economic future.
