MANILA/COTABATO CITY (SDN) — Bangsamoro Transition Authority (BTA) Interim Chief Minister Ahod Balawag “Al-Hajj Murad” Ebrahim has renewed the designations of his official Cabinet family serving in the parliamentary Bangsamoro government.
A copy of the designations of the ministers, deputy ministers, commission chairmen was posted on social media by a member of the BTA Parliament.
Recall that the President Rodrigo R. Duterte, chief architect of the creation of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), approved the re-setting of the region’s first parliamentary elections from its original date of May 9, 2022 to May 2025.
Duterte signed Republic Act No. 11593 on October 28, 2021 after appeals from the Bangsamoro Parliament, Ebrahim and the rest of the regional officials as it reached presidential ears; various quarters also asked the former President to approve the extension, saying the coronavirus pandemic in 2020 and 2021 slowed down the tasks of the transition body.
A mid-term review of the Bangsamoro transition period conducted by the Mindanao People’s Caucus (MPC) prompted the civil society organization (CSO) to recommend the extension, which acted like a snowball — gathering supporters as it took on momentum.
The BTA was tasked to lead and implement the transition from the now defunct 20 years old Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM), which the BARMM replaced and abolished through the Bangsamoro Organic Law (BOL).
Duterte also approved the extension of the term of office of the officials of the BTA, which is running the Bangsamoro government until June 30, 2025.
On the other hand, the former President left to the next administration on whether to re-appoint the current BTA officials.
The BTA official family is comprised of 80 officials — 39 from the national government side and 41 from the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), whose appointments depend on presidential fiat.
The Bangsamoro Attorney General’s Office (BAGO) acknowledged the possibility of changes in the composition of the BTA membership.
“There will be a change in the composition of appointed BTA members. Under Section 2 of R.A. No. 11593, the current President will appoint another set of 80 BTA members, but still, it shall be Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF)-led,” Attorney Sha Elijah Dumama-Alba, the Bangsamoro attorney general, said after the signing of the extension bill.
“We don’t want to cause confusion, and we are looking at the possibility of continuation. There is nothing prohibiting the President from appointing those who are still sitting at the moment except, of course, if they file a Certificate of Candidacy and win,” she said, as reported on the Bangsamoro government website on October 29 last year.
Ebrahim was profuse in thanking Duterte.
“We thank President Duterte and his administration for making sure that the GPH-MILF Peace Process will be successful. This is our shared legacy to Mindanao and the rest of the country,” MILF Chairman Ebrahim said.

Meanwhile, the people of the Bangsamoro, including the BARMM government hierarchy, are keenly awaiting the first State of the Nation Address (SONA) of Duterte’s successor, President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr., to see if he will speak about the Mindanao peace process and the Bangsamoro region, knowing he has not specifically mentioned it in his inauguration speech on June 30, 2022.
News reports quoted the Marcos scion’s Facebook post as inviting the Filipino nation to listen to his SONA on July 25.
“Be with me and listen to the state of the nation and our plans and aspirations as a nation in the coming years,” the President said as quoted via Philippine Star.
Doubtless, he’ll be join by the nation, including his Bangsamoro constituents. (✓)
