Basilan’s Restom Balansag, Mag. del Norte’s Kraine Labasan Bag First Gold Medals in BARMMAA Meet 2024’s Billiards Event

COTABATO CITY (SDN) — The first blood has been drawn in the BARMMAA Meet 2024 here. That’s as far as winning a godl medal is concerned.

After the smoke of battle in the Billiards competition has cleared in a contest of wits and defensive acumen, Restom V. Balansag, Basilan school division office (SDO), and Kraine V. Labasan, Maguindanao del Norte SDO, emerged winners in the cue sports event’s championship on Monday.

SDN — SciTech and Digital News learned about it from the media unit of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao Athletic Association (BARMMAA) Meet 2024 being held from May 11 to 15.

Balansag and Labasan are the first officially recorded winners of Gold Medals in this year’s regional annual sporting competition. Part of their prizes include the honor of representing their respective SDO in the Palarong Pambansa (National Games) 2024.

Along with Balansag in Secondary Grade 8-Ball Boys bracket are Silver Medal, Shahim B. Bagsik, Lamitan City, and Bronze Medal, Alkaher A. Engga, Cotabato City.

In the Girls Category, Silver Medal, Rhonavail C. Gandiao, Maguindanao del Norte, and Bronze Medal, Ruaida S. Sarail, Basilan.

The information came from Tournament Secretary Shiela Mae N. Juanitez, and Tournament Manager Nasser H. Ansing.

Over 4,000 primary and secondary students athletes are participating in the five-day sporting competition who represent 11 SDOs in the Bangsamoro region.

The other day, Dr. Yusoph Thong Amino, executive director of the Ministry of Basic, Higher and Technical Education of the Bureau of Physical Education and Sports Development MBHTE-BPESP), announced a Php1 million incentive for regional sports competition.

Amino, the BARMMAA Meet 2024 sports czar, said the amount is broken down into the following:

  • Overall Champion — Php200,000
  • 1st Overall Champion — Php150,000
  • 2nd Overall Champion — Php100,000
  • 3rd Overall Champion — Php75,000
  • Champion, Elementary Level — Php150,000
  • Champion, Secondary Level — Php150,000

Special Awards 

  • Most Disciplined Delegation — Php25,000
  • Most Friendly Delegation — Php25,000
  • Eco-Friendliest Delegation — Php25,000
  • Best in Saludo Delegation — Php25,000
  • Best in Uniform Delegation — Php25,000
  • Best in Records and Management Delegation — Php25,000
  • Best Host/Billeting School — Php25,000

The of this year’s regional meet revolves around “Empowering Sports for a Stronger United Bangsamoro”, it will conclude on May 15 with the announcement of winners.

Competition proper will stated on Sunday, May 12, for the following sporting events: Archery, Arnis, Athletics, Badminton, Baseball, Boxing, Chess, Basketball, Billiards, Football, Futsal, Paragames, Pencak Silat, Sepak Takraw, Softball, Swimming, Table Tennis, Taekwondo, Tennis, Volleyball, Wrestling, and Wushu.

A Parade of Athletes from the City Plaza to the Cotabato State University (CSU) Oval kicked off BARMMAA Meet 2024 on Saturday, including delegation members from the MBHTE’s 11 SDOs.

The Bangsamoro region, established in 2018 by the Bangsamoro Organic Law (BOL) to implement the 2014 Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro (CAB), is made up of the provinces of Basilan, Lanao del Sur, Maguindanao del Sur, Maguindanao del Norte, Sulu, and Tawi-Tawi, the cities of Cotabato, Lamitan, and Marawi, as well as the Special Geographic Area’s (SGA) 63 barangays or villages that voted “Yes” in a plebiscite in February 2019 to be under the BARMM jurisdiction. With the recent plebiscite at SGA, the BARMM now has eight new municipalities as residents voted “Yes”.

According to the Philippine Atlas BARMM has 4,404,288 people. It has 116 municipalities (plus eight newly established under the SGA: Basilan, 11 municipalities; Lanao del Sur, 39; undivided Maguindanao, 36; Sulu, 19; and Tawi-Tawi, 11. Its component cities are Cotabato (the regional center and capital) in Maguindanao; Lamitan in Basilan; and Marawi in Lanao del Sur. — EDD K. USMAN (✓)
