PASIG CITY, October 7, 2024 (SDN) — St. Gerrard Construction Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Cezarah “Ate Sarah” Rowena Discaya is officially now a candidate for mayor in this urban jungle in the National Capital Region (NCR).
An ocean of red-clad supporters which a police officer placed at more than 2,000 people awaited her at the City Hall grounds.
She and her team filed their COCs just before 4 p.m., their supporters patiently on hand for the historic political event.
After weeks, even months, of discernment, weighing down her options, Ate Sarah as she is popularly known, has decided to ride the bandwagon of support for her to run as the chief local executive of the city.
She and her slate trooped to the Commission on Elections (Comelec) office here, just in the City Hall Compound, and filed their Certificates of Candidacy (COC).
Among those who filed their COC with her are former Miss Universe Shamcy Supsup-Lee and movie actress Ara Mina who are in the running for city councilor.
Speculations and rumors, and an open secret among those close to her have now materialized and is embodied and now being lived by the St. Gerrard Construction CFO.
Together with her husband, Kuya Curlee Discaya, president/CEO of the Quadruple “A” St. Gerrard Construction (Contractor and Development Corporation), of course their family, relatives, allies, friends, and supporters, they have been discerning and taking stock of what’s going on in the city, their eyes and ears always ever watchful of what many Pasigueños were saying, as well as mindful of their poor town mates’ yearning for a change for the better.
The couple is among Pasig’s prominent businessmen, their life story that of the classic rags-to-riches, surviving a gauntlet of obstacles before they succeeded.
Obviously, the change that Pasigueños want to see and feel and experience could mean better and more government services, stronger attention to the plight of Pasigueños, moreso the poor, embracing programs for health, education, jobs and livelihood, as every citizen of the Philippines aches to enjoy.
Her allies said Ate Sarah has no problem dealing with and mingling with the city’s poor population, unlike politicians who were born with silver spoon in their hands and wary of touching them with a 10-foot pole.
So how can political leaders who were born rich and disdain mingling with the poor and marginalized lot be an effective leader in responding to their constituents’ needs, some observers pointed out.
In fact, Kuya Curlee and Ate Sarah can easily draw from their experiences as a family that did not have life’s luxuries, for they were once truly poor as they have narrated to journalists and bloggers.
The couple has recalled a sad and gut-wrenching episode in their life when Kuya Curlee’s brother was sick and they did not have resources to help in his treatment.
Kuya Curlee said his brother eventually died in a hospital without receiving the proper care he deserved. They had nothing, he rued.
As Ate Sarah and her slate emerged from the Comelec building, she issued a prepared statement thanking those who pushed her and trust and believe that she is capable of doing big things, and help lift Pasig City to new heights.
