COTABATO CITY — The Ministry of Basic, Higher and Technical Education (MBHTE) has turned over a newly constructed two-storey, four-classroom public madrasa (Islamic school) in Barangay Lagunde Tugunan, Special Geographic Area (SGA).

Additionally, a newly built two-unit, one-storey computer laboratory was also turned over to Nalapaan Elementary School in Barangay Nalapaan, Malidegao, SGA.

The total project cost of ₱10,482,883.45 was funded under the Special Development Fund (SDF) 2021 and General Appropriations Act of the Bangsamoro (GAAB) 2024. These new facilities are expected to provide learners with a more conducive learning environment and further support the delivery of quality education in the BARMM.

In another development, MBHTE held a groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of a two-storey, six-classroom school building at Campo Uno Elementary School in Barangay Bugasan Sur, Matanog, Maguindanao del Norte.

Totaling ₱16,673,500, the project is funded under the Quick Response Fund (QRF) 2024. This new school building aims to provide learners with a more conducive learning environment and to accommodate the growing number of Bangsamoro learners in the community.

The Bangsamoro region, established in 2018 by the Bangsamoro Organic Law (BOL) to implement the 2014 Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro (CAB), is made up of the provinces of Basilan, Lanao del Sur, Maguindanao del Sur, Maguindanao del Norte, and Tawi-Tawi, the cities of Cotabato, Lamitan, and Marawi, as well as the Special Geographic Area’s (SGA) 63 barangays or villages — now eight new municipalities — that voted “Yes” in a plebiscite in February 2019 to be under the BARMM jurisdiction.

According to the Philippine Atlas BARMM has 4,404,288 people. It has 116 municipalities: Basilan, 11 municipalities; Lanao del Sur, 39; undivided Maguindanao, 36; Sulu, 19; and Tawi-Tawi, 11. Its component cities are Cotabato (the regional center and capital) in Maguindanao; Lamitan in Basilan; and Marawi in Lanao del Sur. (✓)
