Filipina graphic designer a winner in Freelancer Valentines’ Day global contest

MANILA — Freelancer.com uncovers the best Valentine’s Day card designs in the world, with designers from the Philippines, the United States, and New Zealand beating more than 1,300 entries to win the global contest.

Freelancer.com (ASX:FLN), the world’s largest freelancing and crowdsourcing marketplace by total number of users and jobs posted, has named a 22-year-old Quezon City-based Filipina graphic designer as one of the winners in its global search for this year’s best Valentine’s Day greeting card designs.

Riva Louise Vicente, a fresh Advertising Arts graduate from Far Eastern University (FEU) “can’t believe” she is the sole winner from the Philippines, who rose to the top as one of the runners-up in designing the “The World’s Greatest Valentine’s Day Greeting Card,” a crowdsourcing contest held by Freelancer.com to celebrate Valentine’s Day 2019.

She feels very proud of her work, “I came up with my idea by looking at what trend is in style nowadays, which is modern but witty. Saying I love you in a different way. I only used Adobe Photoshop and drawing tablet to create it.”

The Pinay layout artist said she will send her winning card to her dad, who works abroad, saying, “this is one of the few ways I can say how much I love him”.

Riva shared her runner-up win with Toni Freebairn, a neophyte graphic designer from New Zealand, “I still can’t believe that my entry ‘You’re The Only Bun For Me’ was chosen! It’s a pretty amazing feeling knowing that work you have done is enjoyed by others. It makes me really happy and inspires me to continue on my creative journey.” They each took home $100.

Meanwhile, Devon Harrah from the United States bested more than 1,300 entries and was awarded with $200. The recently married man’s win came just in time for his wife to receive his “Love, You Octopi My Thoughts” Valentine’s Day card which he made personal.Screenshot_20190223-215545_1“I love aquatic themes, and I had a couple of ocean-related puns lined up…I jot down my ideas, make a rough sketch, and then fully invest myself. This particular piece I created in Adobe Photoshop CC [Creative Cloud],” the American comic artist and illustrator shared.

The Valentine’s Day competition comes as NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration), the US space agency, launches the final wave of crowdsourcing contests in its Astrobee Challenge Series on the Freelancer.com marketplace, in its continuing efforts to tap into the power of the crowd to source new solutions from Freelancer.com’s global community of more than 31 million users to solve tricky engineering
problems for technology that may one day end up on the International Space Station (ISS).
